Vegan August
Vegan August isn’t quite over yet, but it has been a lot easier than expected in many ways.
Tonight I took the savings realized from a grocery bill spent on tofu, grains and vegetables instead of fancy cheeses, fish and pastries and donated those savings to the Humanitarian Coalition’s famine relief fund.
I’m very torn right now between how good I feel physically and mentally begin vegan and how damn badly I’m craving a croissant and a real latte.
At the very least I’ll be less likely to indulge as often as I used to and I think this experience will make me think very carefully about who had to sacrifice what before I make a decision on what to have for dinner.
Thanks for everybody who came to Fresh with me for too many beach bowls, for all of the recipes and links, for my mom and dad not getting upset, for Micah not eating pizza in front of me and for the Gabardine for pointing, name calling and still procuring soy milk so that I could have a cruelty free latte!
Vegan for a month***

I’ve been reading Grist.org and seen all of the dares that people have taken on for the environment. This and the fact that I really need a project inspired me to do something challenging that’s also good for me. So, I’ll probably regret announcing this, but at least it means I’ll have to stick to it, I’m going vegan for a month starting August 1st.
To add to the challenge, I’m also going to cut my monthly grocery budget by half (no more fancy cheese and lattes ought to help) and will donate the saved money to the Humanitarian Coalition’s famine relief - the Canadian government is matching donations dollar for dollar.
I’m asking you to a) wish me luck b) send me any recipes and tips you may have and c) forgive me if the lack of cheese and Gabardine breakfast pastries makes me a bit cranky.
***Well, actually, more like vegan for 27 days. After all, on August 28th we’ll be in Paris, the land of croissants and cheese.
